"Putting
Benjamin Franklin into Context"
by Tom Occhipinti
| Benjamin Franklin has been
called the "first American." He was a scientist,
inventor, printer, journalist, statesman,
diplomat and philosopher. We have heard his
maxims and they have become part of the
collective consciousness of American society. He
embraced Reason, science and personal economy,
believing they strengthened society and brought
men closer to the Divine. Still, not everyone
had a love affair with Franklin. Many despised
him for the very reasons others have adored him.
This article takes a look at the common charges,
with particular address to those of D.H.
Lawrence. Was Lawrence right? Was Franklin a
detriment to the human spiritual condition? Was
he the forefather of American greed and gross
materialism? |

"Helen
Keller and Language -- Visual References in a Dark World"
by Allan Azouz
| Helen
Keller was known for her powerful strength of
will and thirst for knowledge. Her language
development was unique and though she crossed
the great divide that existed between her
private world and the outer world, her context
of understanding remained distinct. How could
she have imagined the sight-based metaphors she
constructed? Did she intuit them? Or did she
rely on those around her to fill in the missing
pieces in her understanding? |
